Australian authorities uncovered a grim reality during a nationwide crackdown on crypto ATMs. What began as an operation targeting 90 suspected fraudsters revealed most were actually victims—including a woman who lost $430,000 in a romance scam.

The joint operation between AUSTRAC and state police analyzed high-volume transactions across every state. "Many top users were involved in illicit activity—but the majority were innocent victims," said AUSTRAC CEO Brendan Thomas. Scammers had manipulated targets into repeated ATM deposits, often under false pretenses of investments or emergency assistance.

Among the heartbreaking cases: a New South Wales woman only realized she'd been scammed when police arrived weeks after her final transaction. Another elderly victim lost over $200,000 to a fraudulent investment scheme with no recovery prospects. The findings highlight how Australia's tightening regulations still struggle to curb sophisticated crypto fraud.
